I mean of course you want artists to bite the hand that feeds. You want them to bite off the hand that feeds and you want them to feed on it.
TAO WELLS: I believe that the true artist of our times are the politicians and the PR companies and the lobby groups that are creating the frames, um, for how we interpret reality.
NEWSCASTER: The 37 year old says this is conceptual artwork, marketing the idea of unemployment as a valid lifestyle, hoping to spark debate about whether an advanced society would see us work less.
TAO WELLS: We're hoping to get people involved in the direction of society. [LAUGHTER] Nothing less than that.
NEWSCASTER: But what's angered many is the three and a half thousand dollars of public money Wells received from Creative New Zealand for the project.
ROGER DOUGLAS: You actually have to ask the question frankly, should Creative New Zealand actually exist if this is what they do.
