    Leanne Baird The food bill has not gone through yet from my understanding, due to pass in the new year? the one we have at present is very restrictive and needs re hauled.The problem being is as with this article it is rather alarmist and if one reads it, it can seem very frightening, but the truth is sometimes more elusive than a few re-hashed lines and throw away statements.

    Leanne Baird Pertaining to seeds from which I do not have much knowledge about (sorry) more on the food side, but the bill is attempting to level the field with food safety and make it easier for growers. With seeds I have read nothing that can restrict your saving of seeds, it could be pertaining to commercial ventures, that are selling the seeds?. An interesting question though, will look into it. The reason I criticized this article is because I have been sent it a few times, and asked friends who are in the food safety and regulatory side of food and they replied this article has been around for awhile and is full of misinformation. The new food bill as I see it so far from what I have read, may benefit people selling wares in farmers markets and allow more compromise around where you actually produce your product ie at present you have to use a commercial kitchen for food to sell, with the new bill as long as you follow certain food safety procedures et cetera you should be able to make food to sell in your own home or other places. the problems often lay at local council as many of the 'food officers' employed have no knowledge of food or safety and have caused huge problems for local growers and small buisnesses.( I had to put the knife in there sorry!)

    Marian Evans Ah. Thank you. My understanding of the seed issue is that Monsanto (etc) is pressuring governments to outlaw seed saving so people have no option but to buy commercial seeds.

    Leanne Baird My Grandfather worked for years for the now defunct Ministry of Agriculture, he talked about the 'King' potatoes? that he grew, he said that soon you would not be able to buy seeds for them so he saved his stock every year. And I think there could be some truth about Monsanto, but you cannot stop people from saving seeds but you can restrict their access to them which I entirely disagree with.In some ways the seed issue could turn out to be more important, than many of the food bills that will be going through, as I have always believed seeds should be owned by everybody and not sold for huge gain.

    Wells Tao Wei Wei's art work shut down because people were stealing the seeds, actually hand painted porcelain replicas of sunflower seeds. Surly the point was for people to "steal" a few souvenirs.. was he really going to police it? Was it his call to rope it off, or the institutions? Be interesting to know. Perhaps too sad to know.
