CNZ’s previous survey of “creative professionals” was Portrait of the artist: Te whakaahua ö te tangata pükenga published in 2003. It reported that the median income for an artist in 1999 was $20,700 and for a Zealander in paid employment, $27,933, making the annual income for an artist 74% of the median nationally. In 2019 the median for an artist is $35,800 and for New Zealanders in paid employment, $51,800, making the annual income for artists now down to 69% of the medium nationally. (So much for the vitality of the arts in NZ in the 21st century). Yet, the biggest surprise in the “creative professionals” 2019 report is the gender pay gap. At 21% lower nationally for women than men, in the creative industries the gap is more than double at 45%. So, I am working on the premise that CNZ’s findings represent a deliberate challenge to all creative industries to reflect on its infrastructures and implement practical measures to resolve these issues. [I cannot imagine CNZ doing so - but thanks for the report] I can only comment on the visual arts, but I would like to see, (for example), galleries and arts event managers throughout the country reflect on the volume of volunteers that are utilised to deliver the services of their industries. The increase in voluntary work by those seeking to become “creative professionals” documented in the 2019 report is not helpful, indeed a hindrance to developing careers. CNZ’s report should be read as a provocation to actively implement practice solutions from the ground up. 5 Like · Reply · 9h Wells Tao Wells Tao you sign your kids over to a democracy and a democratic economy to have access. Is a musician busy earning money arranging movie music, and a writer busy writing TV scripts and a Director busy directing them, etc the same as a painter busy painting...on spec as usual...or a novelist writing..on spec again. How can these random occupations and incomes be lumped together under the banner,'The Arts'? They're definitely all creative...and some of it is even art...but...? 3 Like · Reply · 6h · Edited Replied to you Dick Frizzell Dick Frizzell Wells Tao Jesus Wells...if you think that that was a contract you are seriously buggered.
