Pope Asher Every action of EG Wakefield promoted heavy class division. The NZ Company specifically chose areas of heavy Māori settlement (Wellington, New Plymouth, Nelson, Wanganui) to settle its earliest clients because the sites were pre-proven to be habitable. His designs for the alienation of Māori land predate the Crown's designs for sovereignty over Aotearoa. His comments to Native Minister William Rolleston 2 days after the 1881 invasion of Parihaka: "Since you have gone so far I think you might as well make the most of the opportunity and smash the native difficulty altogether."

The former convict angered all parties in his (and his Company's) actions and he certainly had no intention of contributing to a classless society.
